12-car pileup on Highway 50 at Cave Rock

CAVE ROCK ” The westbound lane of Highway 50 at Cave Rock has been closed after an 12-car pileup that happened inside the tunnel around 3:40 p.m. Injuries are reported and a medical transport helicopter was summoned, along with ambulances.

Traffic is being rerouted by using the eastbound lanes but motorists can expect delays.

Deputies report both lanes of Highway 50 are icy. Motorists should be prepared to take an alternative route, such as Highway 207 up Kingsbury Grade.

“We’ve got a mess, man,” said Sgt. Tom Mezzetta of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.

Mezzetta guessed traffic would be “backed up a mile” and Nevada Department of Transportation crews were called to place an electronic sign warning westbound motorists of long delays.

Mezzetta said they were trying to summon CALSTAR, which would land at the Cave Rock boat ramp.
