17th annual Old-Timers’ Picnic planned; Historical society sponsoring event

SHERRY MAYS

The 17th annual Old-Timers’ Picnic is scheduled for Saturday at the Truckee River Regional Park.

The Truckee-Donner Historical Society sponsors the gathering, which unites family and friends from Truckee and former residents of Truckee who wish to learn more about the town’s history.

Old photos copied

People are invited to bring old photos for the society’s research historian Guy Coates to copy, which he can do “on the spot” for a speedy return.

People are also encouraged to write down their history and their family’s history.

Picnic Coordinator Sharon Pace Arnold said, “We really consider this more like a big town-family picnic.”

She said last year’s picnic drew more than 170 people. She added that many donated photos, Chinese artifacts and newspapers.

Donations accepted

Those attending should bring a picnic lunch and, if wanted, folding chairs and blankets.

Tables, benches and barbecues are available at the picnic area and the society will provide beverages.

Arnold said donations to the society are appreciated. The non-profit organization will use financial donations to maintain the Old Gateway Cabin, which provides archives and offices for the society, and the Old Truckee Jail museum.
