A foot of snow in Grass Valley Friday morning

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. and#8212; Grass Valley residents woke up to nearly a foot of snow Friday morning. The mercury sits at about 31 degrees, and small flakes of snow continue to fall steadily.

In Cedar Ridge, residents reported nearly 2 feet of the white stuff.

Nevada County has plenty of company: The entire Sierra Nevada range is blanketed in snow and covered by a winter storm warning declared by the National Weather Service — as is much of Nevada and Utah.

The Central Valley is under a wind advisory, and much of the surrounding area is under a storm watch, the weather service reported.

Heavy snow is expected throughout the day, with a high of 31 and an overnight low of 22 degrees. Snow is likely to continue Saturday, with similar temperatures;

Clouds are forecast to lift Saturday night for a sunny Sunday, though clouds are expected to return Monday for a chance of rain on Tuesday, the weather service predicted.
