About 50 Truckee residents show up for jury duty and#8212; to find the court closed

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; About 50 residents showed up Wednesday morning to the Nevada County Superior Court in Truckee to report for jury duty.

Only problem and#8212; the court was closed.

Sean Metroka, the court executive officer and jury commissioner, said the mix-up was due to a clerical error when the court did not inform the would-be jurors the court would be closed Wednesday, Dec. 16, due to a state-mandated monthly closure to save money.

and#8220;The fact of the matter is we made a mistake, and I want to apologize to all those who showed up and#8212; nearly 50 of the 175 summoned,and#8221; Metroka said.

Jury summons usually go out six to eight weeks in advance, Metroka said, and if the court date is canceled or changed, the information goes up on the website and on a dial-in phone system for potential jurors to check, but this time a staffer at the court forgot.

Earlier this year, the Judicial Council of California mandated monthly closures the third Wednesday of every month at county courthouses.

Metroka said he has crafted a letter of apology to all 175 summoned, and they will get credit for serving and#8212; therefore wonand#8217;t be called on for jury duty for a minimum of 12 months.

According to the state closure schedule, the court will also be closed Dec. 25, Jan. 1, Jan.18, Jan. 20, Feb. 12, Feb. 15 and Feb. 17.
