Airport exploring new ideas for 2008

As the Truckee Tahoe Airport approaches its 50th anniversary, the public facility’s board members are brainstorming new ideas for the airport’s next half-century.

Airport staff will explore a number of potential projects ranging from noise-dampening in neighboring homes to creating dark-sky lighting standards on the runway.

“This is all a working plan at this point; this is what they (the board members) care about,” said Airport General Manager Dave Gotschall. “They said, ‘We care about this, we want to study this.'”

Among the ideas that could help reduce noise are studying the impacts of shortening or reducing the capacity of the runway, installing a camera system or a flight-tracking system to monitor air traffic, and even potentially going out to neighbors to help install sound insulation, Gotschall said.

“It could be replacing single-pane with double-pane windows, adding insulation, different ways to reduce the impacts of noise whether it be snowplows, trains, or jets,” Gotschall said.

Airport staff will also look into acquiring more open space along the lines of Waddle Ranch, study night-sky lighting standards to reduce light pollution in the area, and learn about carbon sequestration, Gotschall said.
