Alpine owner to buy RSN

A partnership of investors who own ski areas including Alpine Meadows and dot-com companies intend to buy Resort Sports Network, a national television company dedicated to outdoor and resort communities with an outlet at Lake Tahoe.
The owners of Alpine Meadows, Boreal, Park City Ski Resort, Mount Bachelor, Telluride Ski and Golf Corp. intend to take over ownership of the Portland, Maine-based company from Advent International, a Boston-based investment group, by the end of January for an undisclosed amount.
One of the investors and RSN Tahoe’s General Manager Peter Loughlin said the company plans to make an investment in the network that includes 105 beach and mountain resorts.
Tahoe is one of three regions providing content, and Mark Burchill said the new owners ” who know each other as friends to some capacity ” like what the station’s employees have been doing in terms of programming.
“In Tahoe, they’ve done a nice job on a local level. We’d like to do more volume but keep the pace. There are no changes planned for the existing business. The Tahoe market has a high viewership and solid ratings. We’d like to increase our sales capacity,” said Burchill, who as the lead investor co-founded 24/7 ” one of the early dot-com companies.
Burchill said the group of ski area executives figured owning an affiliated business would be complementary to target the resort visitor.
One of the largest improvements would revolve around splitting the signal between the North and South shores.
“I think that would make a huge difference. We’re excited about that,” he said.
A traffic and billing systems will also be upgraded, along with new camera equipment.
“They’re going to add a few bells and whistles,” Loughlin said, adding he’d like to see high-definition capability.
Loughlin, on staff since 1999, said the deal has been in the planning stages for a while.
“That’s the exciting part of having new owners. They have resources, and they’re willing to commit them,” he said.
The station provides five national shows and eight local such as: “Tahoe Today, Tahoe Tonight, After Hours, Golf Show, Lifestyle and Dining and Real Estate.” Nationally, RSN runs adrenaline-filled segments from South Shore’s Glen Plake called “Reel Thrills.”
It can go live at Sierra-at-Tahoe, Kirkwood Mountain Resort and Northstar-at-Tahoe and runs studios at Heavenly Mountain Resort and Squaw Valley.
The investment group includes Burchill, John Cumming, chief executive officer of Powdr Corp. ” which owns Park City Ski Resort, Alpine Meadows, Mount Bachelor Ski Resort, Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort; Len Conway, a former equity partner in Telluride Ski and Golf Corp; and John Cooney, an owner of EUE Screen Gems Ltd.
