Amtrak train hits, kills man

PLACER COUNTY ” An Amtrak train struck and killed a man on the tracks near the Placer and Nevada county lines on Friday, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident, which most likely occurred late Friday morning near Cold Creek, is being investigated. Sheriff’s Office officials said they had no identification of the deceased, nor do authorities have a reason for the collision at this time.

Passerbys reported the incident Friday at 11:44 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The Amtrak train, called the “Capitol Limited,” runs between San Francisco and Reno. Both east and westbound trains complete a route in the mornings.

Since 1990, the state of California has invested more than $1.8 billion in train systems, millions of which went to upgrading track and signal systems designed to keep pedestrians and drivers safe around Amtrak tracks, reports the company.
