Come Out & Play at Katie’s Playground

The Truckee Tahoe Airport District Board of Directors and staff invite you to join a Dedication and Ribbon Cutting for Katie’s Playground, commemorating the memory of Katie, Hannah and Wyatt Morrison.

Katie Morrison served as an Airport District Board Member and Airport Community Advisory Team member, contributing significantly to these efforts as well as many other initiatives in the community. Katie, Hannah and Wyatt passed away as the result of an aircraft accident in March of 2011. Her contribution to the Airport District as a Board member and Community Advisory Team member are acknowledged and appreciated. Her support and desire to construct a playground on the airport, providing a place for children to play and families to gather are well documented.

The $50,000 playground was built thanks to a partnership between the Truckee Tahoe Airport District and friends of the Morrison family. The playground has is already popular, where children playing and the excitement of aviation can mix perfectly. All are invited to attend the dedication, June 27, 2 p.m. at the Playground Area adjacent to Truckee Tahoe Airport Administration Building, 10356 Truckee Airport Road, Truckee.

Wildlife Shelter turns 25

Wildlife Shelter, Inc. (WSI) is celebrating 25 years of continuous community service this year. Join them and other WSI supporters at the annual June in Bloom celebration at the Tahoe City Golf Course.

The noon Critter Program will be at 1 p.m. with buffet luncheon and auction at 2:15 p.m. The Golf Tournament is set for Saturday, June 29, 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m.-ish. Tickets at the door are $40.

WSI is an educational outreach program through schools, summer bike trail talks, community organizations, clubs and individualized presentations. Discussions will fill the air about local wildlife behavior, physiology, and biology. They are available 24/7 for calls about local wildlife concerns and/or scheduling a program. Volunteer efforts assist displaced, orphaned, and injured wildlife and their finders with expert assistance in determining the best solution. WSI has provided $42,000 in college intern scholarships to date.

Public readings from Squaw Valley Community of Writers

The 43rd Annual Squaw Valley Community of Writers will convene again this summer with workshops in poetry, fiction, nonfiction and screenwriting. In June, the internationally renowned Poetry Workshop will meet for a week. On Thursday, June 27, at 8 p.m. at The Olympic House, 1960 Squaw Valley Road in Squaw Valley, the Squaw Valley Community of Writers will present the five staff poets of this year’s workshops for an evening of poetry readings. Forrest Gander, Robert Hass, Brenda Hillman, and Evie Shockley will read from their published and unpublished work, including poems written in Squaw Valley just days before. Donate what you can! Kings Beach Library accepting donations

Friends of the Kings Beach Library cleaned out the library garage and are accepting donations for the Fourth of July book sale. Drop books during open hours: Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wednesday and Friday, 2-6 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Donations will be accepted during the book sale. Due to the long holiday weekend, the book sale will run July 3-6, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Help set up July 1 and 2, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and community members are invited to help. InnerRhythms to present “The Golden Ticket”

InnerRhythms Dance Centre will celebrate their year-end with “The Golden Ticket,” a full production on stage at the Truckee High School theater on June 28 and 29, 7 p.m. and June 30, for a 2 p.m. matinee. “The Golden Ticket” showcases every studio dancer from minis to adults in an edgy performance inspired by Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. Our education system is facing rapid, dramatic changes at both state and federal levels. What do the new standards mean for students, teachers, parents, and the nation? The adoption and implementation of new standards in math, language arts and eventually in science foreshadows significant changes for public school students across the nation. There are several key differences between the Common Core Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This presentation will explore the similarities and differences between these and existing standards, focusing primarily on NGSS.
