Head Start open house
Join Truckee Pines Head Start for their fall “Open House” on Tuesday Oct. 1, 5-7 p.m., 10100 Estates Drive, Truckee. Check out the pre-school program with new extended hours (5.5 hours day). There will be music, light buffet dinner, activities for parents and children, and raffle prizes. Go, enjoy, and learn about this free program.
Fall days ripe for reading
Stop by the Kings Beach Library for a cookbook on delicious fall stews. Accompany with the C.D. ‘Autumn’ by George Winston and a movie like “On Golden Pond.” KBL also has a large selection of hiking guidebooks, plant identification, and Tahoe history. Preschoolers Storytime every Tuesday, 10:30-11 a.m., stories, nursery rhymes, and a craft. Sept. 22-28 is Banned Book Week. Showcasing books regularly challenged and occasionally banned from public and school libraries. On Oct. 8, a new program will begin in partnership with the North Tahoe Family Resource Center: “Language Café.” Spanish and English speakers will gather and work one-on-one and as a group at 8321 Steelhead Ave., 6-7 p.m. Snacks provided. InnerRhythms master classes
InnerRhythms Dance Centre announces two master classes, to be taught by Valerie Salgado on Saturday, Sept. 28. Dancers ages 8 to 12 will have class 10-11 a.m. ($20), and dancers 13 and older 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. ($25). A question and answer session with Salgado will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. In addition to her acclaimed work for “Smash,” Salgado’s resumé includes Off-Broadway, Bunty Berman Presents, Broadway-bound workshop of Bull Durham the Musical. Salgado received classical dance training at Le Studio in Pasadena, Calif., and has a bachelor’s in dance from the University of California, Irvine. Call 530-550-8464 or email email@example.com. AAUW announces special fund
The Truckee Donner Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) announces a Special Tech Trek Fund in memory of Sharilyn Nelson, long-time member, former president and founder/organizer of AAUW activities. She was the driving force behind funding middle school girls to attend a week-long science and math camp at UC Davis called Tech Trek. The camp includes robotics, architecture, and science. The Truckee Donner AAUW Branch is celebrating its 30th year anniversary. To donate make a tax deductible check to: AAUW Special Projects Fund and mail to Truckee Donner Branch of AAUW, P.O. Smithsonian Magazine’s annual Museum Day Live
Museum-goers can head to Smithsonianmag.com/museumdaylive to download a free ticket for Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day Live. A ticket grants free admission on Sept. 28 to the ticket holder plus a guest to participating museums across all 50 states. The event celebrates knowledge and fun through the nation’s wide array of museums and cultural institutions. Area museums participating include Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood; Nevada State Museum, Carson City; Historic Fourth Ward School, Virginia City; National Automobile Museum, Reno; and Sheppard Contemporary, Reno. The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum and research complex consisting of 19 museums and galleries, the National Zoological Park and nine research facilities. Approximately 30 million people from around the world visit the museums annually.
