Volunteer meeting for Sea Scout Ship leaders

The Western Region Sea Scouts (WRSS) and Tahoe Maritime Museum (TMM) seek volunteers over age 21 for a new co-ed Sea Scout Ship to work with high school students in small boat handling, sailing, wooden boat care, and cruising. Join them on March 1, 2 p.m. to learn more.

Sea Scouts, B.S.A., is the second oldest program in the Boy Scouts of America for boys and girls, ages 13 to 21. Sea Scouts have hands-on adventure on the water, learn character development through education, and make lifelong friends.

The new Tahoe Ship will focus on kayaking, stand-up paddleboards, and small boat sailing. Scouts will learn leadership skills, navigation, marlinspike, plus many maritime skills.

A Donner Party

Celebrating the Olympics, Winter Sports and the Sochi Games on Donner Summit with former Olympian Starr Hurley. Local wines and special Olympic displays and films at the Western SkiSport Museum at Boreal on Saturday, March 1, 4:30-6 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults, including a glass of local wine and hors d’oeuvres, $10 for children.

Register for kindergarten

Join Tahoe Truckee Unified Schools’ Kindergarten Roundups, learn about unique programs at each TTUSD school; the kindergarten day; K Camp summer program; transportation and food services; volunteer opportunities; and transitional kindergarten. Parents must provide copies of child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency to register.

Savvy Dog Training Classes

Upcoming Puppy Socialization and Basic Obedience/ Good Manners classes are starting on Monday, March 10 and Adolescent Obedience/Good Manners class will start on Tuesday, March 11. Classes are held at the town of Truckee/Humane Society animal shelter located at 10961 Stevens Lane.

Swing in to ‘40s Night

North Tahoe High School Jazz Band will bring the swing era to the Kings Beach Conference Center on March 7. From 7-9 p.m., dance the night away to sounds of the big band greats like Gene Krupa, Glenn Miller and the Dorsey boys. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and a no host bar of beer and wine. Tickets are $25 each and tables for 10 cost $200. All proceeds benefit the students good will tour, where they play music for retirement homes, assisted living facilities, special needs schools and elementary schools. Students travel for three days and provide people with 10 free concerts.

Space is limited to 210 seats and tickets are selling fast. Contact Dean Nordby at 530-581-7000, ext. 4125 or contact any Jazz Band Member. Tickets (if available) will be at the door as well.

Lions Cabbage Bash March 15

The fourth annual Cabbage Bash, hosted by the Truckee Lions Club, is a St. Patrick’s Day event Saturday, March 15, 5:30 p.m. at the Community Arts Center on Church Street. Tickets for the fundraiser are $40 per person, and include all-you-can-eat corned beef with traditional trimmings, cooked by master chef Carlo Casagrande and his crew, with Irene Brown’s secret recipe for Irish soda bread.

Enjoy a sit-down dinner served by the local girls youth soccer team that will train in Barcelona, Spain, this year.

Your ticket includes an evening of dining, music and a chance to win one of four $250 cash door prizes. The no-host bar will offer drinks for $1. Purchase your tickets at the Welcome Center in downtown Truckee, Stone’s Tires, Sears Home Town Store, Wagon Train Restaurant or any Lion’s member.
