Seeking Science Expo volunteers



To all parents and community members interested in sharing science with local youth: Tahoe Environmental Research Center is seeking volunteers for the 2014 Science Expo to help March 17-21, 2014) during 11 different 2 and 1/4-hour sessions. This year’s theme is Earth & Space Science. Activities will include space science, Earth systems, geology, weather, climate, and more.

Training is provided and no science experience is required. Training events will be held on March 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village. TERC will also train you during the hour leading up to the start time or over the telephone in advance.

AAUW to celebrate Women’s History

North Tahoe American Association of University Women (AAUW) will celebrate Women’s History month March 13, 2014, with Chautauqua-style presentations. An actress, a judge, a scientist, and a writer will be among the distinguished visitors. The meeting begins at 1 p.m. at the Tahoe Yacht Club, 700 North Lake Blvd., Tahoe City. Pampered Chef in support of Wolverine Boosters

The Truckee Wolverine Boosters Club and Leslie Dugger from Pampered Chef are running an online fundraising party to benefit Truckee High School students. Tree Top Co-op and Forest Charter School informational meetings

Forest Charter School will hold prospective student informational meetings for the 2014/2015 school year for in the Pioneer Center on the first floor of the Sierra Building. Tree Top Co-op supports individualized learning styles through community engagement, a safe and positive school environment, interactive approaches to standards-based education.

Become an English tutor

You can help adults in Truckee improve their reading, writing, and speaking. Volunteer to become an English tutor with the Read Up! program, a free tutoring service based out of the Truckee Library. There will be a tutor training in March in Truckee for new tutor incumbents at a mutually convenient time. Books and training are provided. English tutoring is an enjoyable and productive opportunity to give back to the community. You must be at least 18 years of age. Tahoe Truckee Flyfishers to meet

Tahoe Truckee Flyfishers will meet on Thursday, March 20, 6 p.m. at the Community Recreation Center in Truckee for a program on fishing the Middle Fork Feather River. Located an hour’s drive north of Truckee, it is one of the first rivers to be designated as Wild & Scenic and considered by many outdoor authors to be the most beautiful river in the state of California.

Guest speaker Jon Baiocchi will explain the three different zones managed by the U.S. Forest Service, access points, techniques, tactics, entomology, fly patterns, and the fish that inhabit the MFFR. The program features 130 slides of colorful and inspiring images, plus detailed maps of the area.

Family Fun Night

Friday, March 21, 5 -7 p.m. at Truckee Elementary School. The Family Resource Center of Truckee invites kids of all ages and families to join the FRC for Family Fun Night. The cafeteria will be transformed into the “Magic Tree House” with activities that include crafts, science experiments, readings from the Magic Tree House Book Series and lots of story-related fun. A family dinner will be provided and all activities are free.

Liberty Utilities scholarships announced

Liberty Utilities again offers academic scholarships for eligible high school and college students within its service territory: South Tahoe High School, Loyalton High School, Douglas High School (students residing in Alpine County only), Coleville High School, North Tahoe High School and Portola High School, as well as Lake Tahoe Community College.

The six high school scholarships are $500 each (an increase from $250 each). High school seniors must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 and be accepted to an accredited four-year or two-year university or college or accredited vocational school. They also must have community service experience where they reside.

The Lake Tahoe Community College scholarship is $750 (an increase from $500).

Interested students should contact their school’s financial aid office or counselor to obtain an application. The individual schools have different deadlines, but all scholarships will be awarded starting mid-May through the end of June. Liberty Utilities representatives will attend the school’s awards ceremonies to present the scholarships.
