Volunteer for Mt. Houghton Trail Building Kickoff Celebration

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is building a new trail to Mt. Houghton Summit from the Tahoe Rim Trail. Help kick off this project by joining Mt. Houghton’s first volunteer trail building day on July 19. TRTA will provide lunch to pre-registered volunteers thanks sponsors The Clif Bar Family Foundation and National Environmental Education Foundation.

This trail construction project protects Tahoe Draba, a species that grows above 8,000 ft. along the peaks of Lake Tahoe. The TRTA will create a single trail to Mt. Houghton that will keep users from damaging critical Tahoe Draba habitat.

Meet at the Mt. Rose Summit parking lot then carpool up to Relay Ridge. Arrive no later than 9 a.m. Participants should be back to vehicles by 4 p.m. No experience necessary. TRTA has follow up workdays scheduled on Thursdays and Saturdays until Oct. 11.

Twin-Tower witness, author to speak

Could the 9/11 attacks been thwarted by proper military action? Author Bert Upson, a close survivor of the World Trade Center disaster and a witness to its rescue efforts, will describe the event on July 24 at the monthly general meeting for the IVCB Veterans Club.

Upson’s gripping description and analysis is found in his newly published book, “On a Clear Day.” On Sept. 11, 2001, Bert was preparing to lead a management seminar on the 78th floor of the South Tower of the Trade Center when the first plane hit the North Tower. Just minutes before the second plane hit the South Tower, he escaped only to witness the horrible destruction and heroic evacuation.

“On a Clear Day” is human, gripping and professional. The talk is open to the public. RSVP to Bob Wheeler at 775-843-9888 or BWheeler@SNPHomes.com. Seating is limited. Learn more about the Club at inclinerecreation.com/classes_programs/IVCB_Veterans.

High school exchange students seek host families

Visiting students ages 15-18 from Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand and more seek host families for the 2014-2015 academic school year. Host families are needed for fall semester and full school year.

Host families (traditional families, singles, empty nesters, etc.) serve as mentors and a home base for their student. Visiting students participate as active members of the family and integrate into their host’s daily routines and traditions. Hosting an international student is a way to explore a new culture and promote a sense of lifelong learning and adventure.

iE-USA, the sponsoring program, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting education and understanding through intercultural and academic exchange. Contact Dawn Green at d.green@international-experience.net, 208-447-8118. Host families may review prospective student profiles online at iE-USA.org. Families interested in hosting this year must apply by Aug. 15, 2014.

Nevada Department of Veterans Services license plates

The “Pick Your Plate” advertising campaign was launched in early June to raise awareness and encourage more veterans to switch over to a veteran license plate for their vehicles. The DMV has 21 plates for veterans and family members, which can be viewed at http://www.dmvnv.com/platesveterans.htm. A portion of the purchase funds the Veteran Gift Account. Other plates include veteran plates for women, coast guard, disabled veterans and others.

Cruise with Captain Bucko

Folks who never get onto the lake or only cruise to Emerald Bay miss most of Tahoe’s treasures. “Captain Bucko’s Onboard Cruising Guide” by historian and resident Roger Huff enables boaters to take their own “self-guided tours.” It contains: answers to frequently asked questions, captivating stories, local legends, and guides to Tahoe’s must-see points of interest, marine facilities and boater-friendly restaurants. Also included are safety tips, emergency contact information, nautical rules of the road, boat handling and common weather bulletins, all offered in a fun-to-read format with color photos and sprinkled with Bucko’s wry boating humor.

Do you know: in what Bill the lion liked to ride, tips for surviving in cold water, the legends of Eagle Rock, where the lake’s deepest point is at, what made the Bear Slides, how to make a distress call, wake management laws, or the rules of navigation in narrow channels? If not, purchase the guide book at The Bookshelf in Truckee; Obexer’s Boat Co. in Homewood; The Gatekeeper’s Museum in Tahoe City; Sierra Boat in Carnelian Bay and The Potlach in Incline.

Don’t leave port without it!

Jump in to Tahoe Beaches App

The Tahoe Fund is once again promoting the Tahoe Beaches App to help beachgoers find their way to more than 50 public beaches around the Lake.

The app, available in iTunes and Google Play, allows visitors to plan their Tahoe experience with images and details about beach amenities, including barbecues, boat rentals, pet restrictions, and public transportation at more than 50 public beaches. Twitter feeds enable real time information from the public agencies managing the beaches. Users can post their favorite beaches to Facebook and invite family and friends to join them. The app also includes stewardship information to encourage protecting the environment.

Tahoe Fund developed the app, co-funded by the California Tahoe Conservancy through the Lake Tahoe License Plate Program. California Tahoe Conservancy, California State Parks, Tahoe City PUD, North Tahoe PUD, Nevada Division of State Parks, the U.S. Forest Service and Tahoe Transportation District collaborated to develop the app.

Thunderbird Yacht needs community help

The Thunderbird Yacht’s future is in peril. “Thunderbird’s engines are blown and the yacht cannot operate this season,” said Bill Watson, Chief Executive of the Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society. “The only good news is the failures occurred in a year when Thunderbird is trapped in her boathouse due to the drought at Lake Tahoe. If we work together to raise approximately $250,000 before Labor Day, I can have replacement engines installed in time to be operational again for the 2015 season.”

One family has already committed $50,000 on the condition the remaining money is raised before Labor Day. This means that 20 percent of the goal has been reached.

San Francisco Bay area adventurer and real estate tycoon Captain George Whittell, Jr. commissioned Thunderbird yacht to look like his Duesenberg automobiles and Douglas DC-2 aircraft. Launched on Lake Tahoe in 1940, the yacht was later owned by resort mogul Bill Harrah. Today, Thunderbird serves as a floating classroom and remains the undisputed queen of Lake Tahoe’s vintage wooden boats.

For more information visit http://www.ThunderbirdTahoe.org or call Watson at 775-832-8755.
