Carfit for seniors



Sierra Senior Services will bring Carfit to Truckee on Aug. 15, 9:30 a.m.-noon, EAA building parking lot at Truckee Airport on 10356 Truckee Airport Road. Developed through collaboration among the American Society on Aging, American Automobile Association, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association, CarFit is offers older adults the opportunity to check how their personal vehicles “fit” them. Trained volunteers guide drivers through a 12-point checklist. An occupational therapist will provide information on recommended devices or adjustments to maintain and strengthen driving health. Sponsored by Sierra Senior Services and Area 4 Agency on Aging. An appointment is required. Older drivers may call Sierra Senior Services 530-550-7600 to reserve their spot.



Nevada Health Centers Mammovan rolling to town

Early detection of breast cancer saves lives, however many women in northern Nevada have never had a mammogram. Fear, lack of funds, transportation conflicts, or no insurance are some reasons women have not accessed a breast cancer screening. The Nevada Health Centers Mammovan, a mobile mammography unit makes breast cancer screenings accessible to uninsured and underserved women in need. The Mammovan will visit Incline Village on Aug. 19, offering mammograms to women 40 years or older at the The Donald W. Reynolds Community Non Profit Center (Parasol Building), 948 Incline Way. Patients will be seen 7:45 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Call 1-877-581-6266 to qualify or schedule an appointment.

Most insurance, Medicaid, Medicare and Women’s Health Connection are accepted. Through the kind support of partner organizations, mammograms will be available to low-income, uninsured women at no cost to them upon qualification. The Mammovan is a program of Nevada Health Centers and the mammograms are supported through grants from the Food 4 Less, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Northern Nevada Affiliate, The David and Linda Shaheen Foundation, The Safeway Foundation, The Vons Foundation, The National Breast Cancer Foundation, The Caesar’s Foundation and others.

Squeeze In Restaurants to hold food and hygiene drive

In an effort to draw attention to the year-round need for food and other resources in the Northern Nevada area, Squeeze In restaurants will hold a food and hygiene item drive for Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada and the St. Vincent’s Programs.

During August, Squeeze In will collect non-perishable food items, such as pasta, rice, canned food, boxed food and baby food, as well as travel-sized personal hygiene items, including shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, razors, feminine hygiene items as well as diapers. Donate an item in the Squeeze In collection barrels and receive a free short stack of pancakes or a half order of biscuits and gravy on your next visit. Find Squeeze In restaurants in downtown Truckee, Northwest and South Reno and Sparks, open 7 a.m.-2 p.m. daily.

Catholic Charities will distribute food donations in the St. Vincent’s Food Pantry. Hygiene items will be given to local families and job seekers through the Emergency Assistance Program. Combined, these two programs help close to 200,000 people in an average year.

Support C*A*R*E* Chest of Sierra Nevada

OverAchievers, a nonprofit association that supports high-achieving high school students, has included C*A*R*E* Chest as part of their Aug. 23 golf tournament. Proceeds benefit C*A*R*E* Chest’s medical resource programs and scholarships for Reno and Incline High School graduating seniors. The tournament is a foursome team scramble at Somersett Country Club. On Aug. 24 Legends Grill, Sports & Spirits has again selected C*A*R*E* Chest to benefit from their annual golf tournament at Washoe Golf Course. This is a fun, customer appreciation tournament featuring a raffle, special tee prizes, barbecue and more. Register by Aug. 15 by calling 775-853-5550.

Insights into brain health

The Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation will present world-class experts from the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in a free community forum Sept. 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center, 948 Incline Way, Incline Village. The Las Vegas medical center is a facility dedicated to the pursuit of more effective treatments for brain diseases and to provide state-of-the-art care for patients and their families. Community sponsors are the Incline Village Community Hospital, North Lake Tahoe Bonanza and the Sierra Sun.

The forum panel will include Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, a clinician and neuroscientist with expertise in clinical trials and drug development and strategist to deliver optimum care to patients with neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Ryan Walsh is an expert in the field of applied and experimental neurotherapeutics, who developed an MRI-based analysis of brain networks underlying cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Timothy West is dedicated to medical education and clinical research, with a focus on improving patient outcomes and developing novel therapeutics in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Dr. Kate Zhong is leading the clinical and research team conducting trials to advance treatment in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Doula training

Tahoe’s Connection for Families (TCF) will host a Doula Training Workshop at 761 Northwood Blvd. in Incline Village. A “doula” is a trained and experienced professional who provides physical, emotional and informational support to a mother during pregnancy, through birth, and also provides support during the postpartum period while mother and child bond. Studies have shown when doulas are involved in the birth, labors are shorter with less complications, the babies are healthier and breastfeed more easily.

Join instructor Janine Maitri Sept. 6-8, for a class series on becoming a doula. Introduction to Childbirth, Childbirth Education Class, Sept. 6, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuition: $145, with $20 early bird discount if enrolled at least three weeks in advance. Doula Training Intensive Workshop, Sept. 7 and 8, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuition: $425 with $30 early bird discount if enrolled at least three weeks in advance.

Larry Sage Bike Ride

Join Truckee Trail foundation, Larry’s wife Sue, and the local cycling community to remember Larry and enjoy a beautiful ride. Join the inaugural Larry Sage Bike Ride Saturday, Aug. 24. The ride begins 9 a.m. at Paco’s Bike & Ski parking lot and back (or less, depending on ability). Riders must register online at http://www.truckeetrails.org by Aug. 19. Lunch and music are provided. Music starts at 11:30 a.m., lunch is at noon. Donations will go to the Truckee Tails Foundation and are greatly appreciated. Larry lived a life of outdoor adventure, making use of everything TTF is working toward building – improved access to natural places, more hiking trails, and better bikeways. In Larry’s memory, Truckee Trails is committed to advocate for well built, connected trails and bikeways – keeping the community safe for non-motorized transportation and recreation.
