MediCal and Covered CA help

The North Tahoe Family Resource Center in collaboration with the Truckee Family Resource Center and County Health and Human Services will be available to assist the public with completing their MediCal and Covered CA healthcare enrollment applications on Jan. 8, 7-9 a.m. at the Tahoe Forest Laboratory Draw Station, 10956 Donner Pass Road Ste. 230, Truckee (inside the Medical Office Building). Wild Winter Wednesdays commence

Kick-off Wild Winter Wednesdays, Jan. 8, 3:30-6 p.m., with events continuing every Wednesday throughout the winter season in support of Disabled Sports. Half-price nachos and wings and $4 featured draft beer with different drink sponsors each night in the bar. Huge free raffle with tons of prizes including sport equipment, sporting event tickets, swag and more! Proceeds benefit Disabled Sports USA-Far West at Alpine Meadows.

Avalanche education courses

Squaw’s new 3-day AIARE Avalanche 1 course kicks off Wednesday, Jan. 8-10, for $389 with more classes throughout winter. A one-day avalanche awareness course on Jan. 12 costs $149.

The one- and three-day courses teach the basics of snow science, how to access and read the avalanche advisory, how to operate standard avalanche equipment (beacon, probe, and shovel), and how to make good decisions.

The one-day and three-day course follow the Avalanche Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) curriculum and is taught by AIARE Qualified Instructors.

Jazzercise new student special

Two free weeks for full-time, local residents. Jazzercise is a fun and challenging 60-minute total body workout that combines aerobics, strength training and stretching. Move to hot, current music and all ages are welcome. Get great results at friendly classes at the lake front North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach. Monday through Saturday, 8:45 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 p.m.

Endurance Snowshoe Hike

All Saturdays through March, 8:30 a.m. to noon. Start with a hot buffet breakfast at Stella restaurant then head to Donner Summit. Tahoe Trips and Trails will provide snowshoes, poles and knowledgeable guides who will share Donner Pass area history. The spectacular scenery and crisp mountain air will be a sweet reward.
