Sunshine Letter | Relay generates almost $60,000 to fight cancer
TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — To Truckee/North Tahoe Relayers and Supporters,
Thank you for helping the American Cancer Society 7th Annual Relay For Life “Friends Share the Journey,” which generated almost $60,000 for cancer research and programs. Each and every penny raised is appreciated. Ninety survivors of cancer were honored at the event, as were their caregivers.
More than 400 people participated in a relay team and 300-plus people came to honor those who are battling cancer and those who we have lost to cancer. A record of 1,000 luminaries were lit all night around the track; each candle telling a story.
The Relay could not have happened without the support of the local business and musicians. And boy, did they support.
The pre-events Paint The Town Purple and Ribfest were a huge success, thanks to Zano’s Family Italian and Pizzeria, Tri Counties Plaza/Morrison Sales Team, Kroemer Investments, AIM and Associates, Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce, Tri Counties Bank, Truckee Hometown Sears, Auburn Bar-B-Q, Six Peaks Grille, DBI Distributors, CATT, Napa Auto Parts, Porter’s Sports, Robert Sutton Paving, town of Truckee, Safeway, OK Choral Barbershop Quartet, Blues Callin’ and The Deckheads.
The Relay was honored to have the volunteer services of Tamara Anderson of Soundmasters. The Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus and soloist Tom Rinne and Pam Moutinho, the cast members of “Annie,” Jody Sweet, Natalie Tomasello, Bias and Dunn, Drop Theory, Donner Bagpipers, Lynelle Tyler & The Roundabouts, Sheldon Felich & Friends and The Deckheads entertained and delighted the Relayers with their sounds and tributes.
Thanks to Truckee Tahoe Unified School District, North Tahoe PUD, Mountain Hardware & Sports, Mountain Home Center, The Family Resource Center, Sierra Sun, KTKE, Destination Hotels & Resorts, Marty’s Café, Squeeze In, The Truckee Winery, Girl Scouts Troop 692 and other Scouts of Truckee, Steve Randall, Dan O’Gorman, Karen Aaron, Christine Madden, Kristin Oswalt, Ruth Cross, Tom Hobday, Al Pombo Company, Don Geresy Construction, Lucky Dog Consulting, The Sign Shop, Urban Angels, Western Nevada Supply, Waters Septic, Crux Events, Carla & Tom Beebe “Faces of Cancer” art project, and many more helped make this one special event. Thank you.
Sue Vickers, owner of Hair Around the Corner, cut 10 volunteer Relayer’s hair to make a donation of 14 ponytails, to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program to make wigs that are given away, free of charge, to cancer survivors. What a tribute!
The Lion’s Club deserves big thanks for the use of their food trailer and team. Food donations from Taco Station, Golden Rotisserie, Treat Box, Starbucks, Truckee Bagel, El Sanchos, Casa Baeza, Tacos Jalisco, Cake Tahoe and Mio Vienio were so appreciated. And, of course, Truckee Fire Department for their much anticipated yummy, hot breakfast on Sunday morning.
Without the Super Relay Committee, Team Captains and their teams, such tremendous event could not have been pulled off. Their dedication to finding a cure for this dreadful disease is inspiring. Twenty-four hours of Relay, even in the summer can be hard, be it warm or cold.
You all made it fun!!
Hope to see you, and many more, at the track next July.
Again, my sincere thanks,
Chris Otto, Chair of 2013 American Cancer Society Truckee Tahoe Relay For Life
