Anti-Litter drive starting on roads

The Caltrans sign in Truckee this week said it all: “Don’t trash California.”

Picking up litter along the state’s highways has cost Caltrans as much as $55 million a year. To address the problem, Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol have launched a summer-long litter abatement program.

The primary sources of highway littering, according to Caltrans, are trucks with improperly covered loads, illegal dumping, drivers, pedestrians and construction sites.

As part of its litter abatement plan, Caltrans is working with other stakeholders to remove trash and to reduce the incidence of littering. Among its partners, volunteers with the Adopt A Highway program are patrolling the state’s roadways.

On Tuesday, 25 volunteers from the Resort at Squaw Creek kicked off the program by removing litter from Highway 89 south near Cabin Creek Road. Said the group’s Diane Haynes: “Everybody who has adopted a highway should be clearing their strip.”

Haynes added that the volunteers collected 26 bags of trash, and were awarded prizes for the “grossest, most expensive and most unique” trash found during the Adopt A Highway outing.

Individuals or groups that would like to assist in the litter abatement program can call Mark Dinger, a Caltrans public information officer, at 741-4572.
