Armed robbery suspect apprehended
Following three armed robberies along the Interstate 80 corridor, an 18-year-old man was arrested and two were questioned regarding two additional robberies in Truckee early Sunday morning.Approximately 10 minutes after the J & L Shell Mini Mart on Donner Pass Road reported that a man wielding a knife demanded money from a cashier, a Truckee Police Department officer pursued the described vehicle into downtown Truckee. The man, later identified as Ryan Christopher Crandall of Colfax, stopped his vehicle and was arrested at approximately 2 a.m. on suspicion of armed robbery.”When he stepped out … all that money came flying out from his lap into the wind,” said Sgt. Dan Johnston. “He didn’t have time to put it away.”The police department estimates that Crandall stole between $300 and $500. He got away with exactly $91 from the mini mart, Johnston said, and probably $300 to $400 from the Bookshelf, a bookstore in the Gateway shopping center. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating whether Crandall and an unnamed juvenile were responsible for armed robberies in Auburn, Colfax and Cisco Grove on March 27 – three days before Crandall was arrested in Truckee.Cpt. Rick Armstrong of the sheriff’s office said witness statements indicate that the five separate robberies are linked to Crandall.Officers recovered a gun, believed to be used in the first three robberies, at an undisclosed location in Reno.”This is all speculation but he probably did the robberies, went to Reno and blew that money,” Armstrong said. The sheriff’s office does not know how much money Crandall may have stolen from the three previous convenience stores.Other than the money, Truckee officers said they seized clothing, two different folding knives and disassembled pieces of a .22 revolver from Crandall’s car.Two juveniles were questioned and released in connection with the robberies. Placer County officials are still looking investigating another suspect, also a juvenile, about involvement in the robberies.Crandall was booked into the Nevada County Jail for suspicion of two counts of armed robbery and his bail was set at $150,000.Charges in Placer County have not been made, but officers expect to do so pending further investigation.
