Arts for the Schools | Delivering the passion of Bohemian cabaret
Vagabond Opera, an imaginative ensemble of unique talents, will be letting loose a world of riverboat gambling queens on Truckee and Tahoe. Arts for the Schools will present Vagabond Opera to a general audience as part of its OnSTAGE Community Performance Series Friday, Dec. 5, at the Cal Neva Resort Frank Sinatra Showroom in Crystal Bay.The musicians will take to the stage at Moodys on Saturday, Dec. 6 as a fundraiser for Arts for the Schools, after serving as musical mentors for a week to students at Truckee and Lake Tahoe area schools.Vagabond Operas visit to Truckee and the Lake Tahoe area is a rare opportunity to enjoy one of the countrys most unique ensembles. At Moodys and at Cal Neva, the six-piece, Portland, Ore.-based band will deliver an eclectic mix of original and traditional compositions, unified by an Old-World mood. The result is a global repetorie in many languages: gut-bucket swing, tangos, Paris hot jazz, Ukranian folk-punk ballads, Arabic belly dance, Klezmer, operatic arias and vigorous originals. Each of these styles is played with skill, exuberance and a gritty Vagabond edge. A Vagabond Opera show is a chance to time-travel, The Washington Post wrote. Specifically, to 1920s Paris. On a riverboat. With a glass of absinthe in one hand and a long cigarette holder in the other.Masters of many genres, Vagabond Opera liberates opera from its usual construct. As bandleader Eric Stem describes it, This is opera reinvented for the rest of us.Teaching children an appreciation for music is an important reason for the groups visit. During their week at Lake Tahoe and Truckee schools, Vagabond Opera will take students on an exuberant, interactive exploration of what makes a song. They will be reaching more than 1,200 students in Tahoe, Truckee and Incline Village elementary schools. The band will discuss and demonstrate their instruments, how they are used to build a song, and share with young audiences the process for developing sounds, rhythms and lyrics. The student audience will compose a song, which Vagabond Opera will perform on the spot. Support Arts for the Schools, and have yourself an outrageous musical extravaganza.
