AT&T increases award for info on recent vandalism

AT&T California announced Tuesday the company is increasing its reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals who allegedly caused a widespread Internet and phone outage last week.AT&T has doubled the reward and is now offering to pay $10,000 for information that helps identify and prosecute those who reportedly cut telephone cable from utility poles off Highway 50 east of Placerville on May 15. The reward deadline for information is Aug. 1.A few tips have been called into AT&T, but so far none have proved substantial, said Vanessa Smith, a spokeswoman for AT&T of Northern California.The vandalism, which is a federal offense, interfered with Internet and telephone service from Placerville to South Lake Tahoe and parts of the North Shore and Truckee.Anyone with information on the cable theft incidents can call AT&T Security at (925) 543-8000.
