Australian nation arrested on rape charge

Staff reports

An Australian national, who is a seasonal employee at an area ski resort, was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of sexual assault after officers responded to a call from a young woman who had just left a party in Tahoe Donner.

Martin George Kobier, 25, was arrested after Truckee Police Department officers heard testimony from the victim and brought Kobier in for questioning.

According to police reports, the 21-year-old woman had been at a party with some friends when, at around 4 or 5 a.m., she laid down to go to sleep. She woke up in the midst of being sexually assaulted, said Sgt. Dan Johnston of the Truckee Police Department.

The woman and her friends left the Davos Drive house, where the party was taking place, to call 911, Johnston said.

“Officers were called to meet two girls who were requesting medical assistance for one of the females who reported that she had been raped,” Johnston said.

The woman was taken to Tahoe Forest Hospital where she received treatment.

He said both parties had consumed alcohol, but it was unclear as to how much alcohol was in either person’s bloodstream.

In its first year, the Truckee police department responded to only four or five rape calls, and Johnston said it’s an uncommon occurrence in Truckee.

“It’s not a big problem in this community,” he said. “What we usually see is statutory rape and acquaintance rape.”

“It’s quite clear, based on (the victim’s) statement, that she said ‘no,'” Johnston said. “It needs to be clear that no means no.”

Kobier’s bail was set at $100,000.
