Authorities: Tahoe Vista couple killed after being struck by suspected drunken driver

Staff report

TAHOE VISTA, Calif. and#8212; A local couple was killed this week in southwest Colorado after the motorcycle they were riding was struck by a car driven by a suspected drunken driver, authorities said.

According to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis, at approximately 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Frank Steward, 66, and Jessica Steward, 65, of Tahoe Vista, were riding a 2011 Harley-Davidson eastbound on Highway 160 near Hesperus, Colo., when a 1997 Mercury Tracer traveling westbound crossed the double yellow line and struck the motorcycle.

The motorcycle rolled and struck a guard rail and a wire fence before coming to a stop 209 feet away, said Lewis. The Stewards died on scene.

The driver of the Tracer and#8212; Stacie Pierce-Green, 40, of Cortez, Colo. and#8212; was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, Lewis said. According to an article in the Durango Herald newspaper, Pierce-Green also was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter; as of Wednesday night, she was being held in the La Plata County jail on $25,000 bail.

The victims were active members of the Truckee/Tahoe community. Frank Steward was a wood carver; his signature totem pole carvings can be seen at many locations throughout North Tahoe, and his art was featured most recently during the 2010 Tahoe Art Tour.
