INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Tahoe Institute for Natural Science invites members of the Lake Tahoe community to attend a free public talk on Thursday, July 11, featuring authors of the recently released book, “Birds of the Sierra Nevada.”

Ted Beedy, Ed Pandolfino, and Keith Hansen will take you on a virtual transect of the Sierra Nevada, from the oak savanna in the west, through serene conifer forests of the west side, up into the majestic alpine regions, and down the steep eastern escarpment to the pinyon/juniper woodlands and open steppes of the Great Basin.

Along the way you’ll see and hear the stunning diversity of birds that make the Sierra their home.

Learn about which birds are in decline and which are expanding and increasing, as the authors address some mysteries surrounding some of those species and discuss how birders can help to solve them.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Meiling Room at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center at 948 Incline Way in Incline Village.

Hansen will have original art for sale, including large prints of the book plate originals. Copies of the book will also be for sale.

The talk begins at 7 p.m., with time before for light refreshments and socializing, and time after to meet the authors and get your copy signed.

The following morning, Friday, July 12, Beedy and Hansen will co-lead a bird walk with Dr. Will Richardson and Kirk Hardie, co-executive Directors of TINS.

ABOUT THE BOOK

“Birds of the Sierra Nevada” is a long-awaited follow up to Discovering Sierra Birds, also authored by Ted Beedy.

The book features the natural histories of birds of the Sierra Nevada, the origins of their names, the habitats they prefer, how they communicate and interact with one another, their relative abundance, and where they occur within the region.

In addition to characterizing individual species, “Birds of the Sierra Nevada” also describes ecological zones and bird habitats, recent trends in populations and ranges, conservation efforts, and more than 160 rare species that have occurred in the region.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Ted Beedy co-authored “Discovering Sierra Birds” and has written numerous publications and articles on Sierra birds.

Ed Pandolfino is President of Western Field Ornithologists and has published more than two dozen articles on status and distribution of western birds.

Keith Hansen is a professional bird artist whose illustrations have appeared in numerous books.
