Avalanche traps snowboarder for 20 minutes

Staff reports

A snowboarder at Donner Ski Ranch was buried waist deep in snow for approximately 20 minutes on Jan. 3 after the cornice he had been standing on gave way beneath him.

According to Garry Cox, general manager at Donner Ski Ranch, the juvenile had been snowboarding in a closed area with a couple of friends when the accident occurred. One of the snowboarder’s friends alerted a ski patroller, who quickly located and extracted the snowboarder from the snow.

He was taken to Tahoe Forest Hospital as a precautionary measure but sustained no injuries.

“He was back up here about an hour later,” Cox said.
