TRUCKEE, Calif. — Moody’s Bistro Bar & Beats in historic downtown Truckee is the location for “Skiing Afghanistan,” a slide show presentation by professional mountaineer Ben Mitchell at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8.“Skiing Afghanistan” is the next episode of Moody’s slide show series, a monthly artisan and outdoor sports-focused show that highlights talented people and nonprofit organizations of the Truckee-Lake Tahoe community. Mitchell will share photos and talk about his team’s experience of skiing the backcountry of this dangerous territory.He has been a professional mountain guide for more than 10 years. Leading trips throughout Alaska, the Cascades, the Sierra and the Alps.He began climbing and skiing up in Washington State and has moved around guiding and skiing throughout the world, including skiing, climbing, and BASE jumping trips to both polar circles.He lives in Tahoe and spends a large portion of the year guiding skiing in Alaska and living in Chamonix for the summers.Between guiding and teaching avalanche courses he tries to make time for personal trips. Last spring he ventured to the mountains of Afghanistan to search out new and un-skied terrain. Along with three other friends the group spent one month wandering the Wakhan Corridor and skiing whenever possible. The slideshow will showcase the adventures of skiing high altitude terrain, in an extremely remote and untraveled location. Feb. 5 — Jeremy Mayer, who disassembles typewriters and then reassembles them into full-scale, anatomically correct human and animal figures. Jeremy has been featured in Wired Magazine, Popular Mechanics and is currently in a yet-to-be-released documentary about typewriters with Tom Hanks.
