Band telethon nets nearly $7,000

The Tahoe-Truckee High School Band’s second annual telethon fund-raiser brought great results with $1,000 more in pledges than last year.

The telethon, organized by band students and TEMPO High parent volunteers, raised approximately $6,900 Saturday. With a live spot on Tahoe-Truckee Community Television’s Channel 6 between 1 and 9 p.m., telethon volunteers worked hard to encourage pledges while entertaining audiences.

One caller made an anonymous pledge that she would match new pledges dollar for dollar up to $1,000. That goal was met when community members surpassed the $1,000 mark in new donations.

“The day itself went absolutely wonderfully,” said TEMPO High parent Helen Solli-Nowlan. “It’s live TV, so we had a few interesting moments. Overall it went well, and people said we did a good job. A lot of the kids were helping and it was just great participation on everybody’s part.”

The pledge money will go towards the purchase of band instruments and support of music scholarships as well as the band’s annual spring tour, which includes touring the state and giving free concerts to convalescent, children’s and veteran’s hospitals.
