Boats evicted at Donner

Staff Reports

Boat owners who’ve been illegally using the beaches at Donner State Memorial Park as docking grounds may have a rude awaking starting Sept. 2.

As of that day, any boat, vessel or watercraft remaining on State Park property will be removed and stored at the owner’s expense pursuant to Title 14 CCR 4660.

“It’s a problem that’s been getting worse and worse over the years,” said Ranger Mark Hoffmann. “Some people leave their boats on the beaches all summer long. The thing is that it’s such a cool section of beach, but you can’t even use it because of the 40-or-so boats in the way.”

Hoffmann said the park really wants to give the beaches back to the people, maybe even put some picnic tables in, and make the area more user-friendly.

“Right now you’ve got to wade through a sea of boats to get down to the water,” he said. “[The boats] are roadblocks to this beautiful area.”

For the last few weeks, Hoffmann has been posting signs to notify vessel owners of the laws and possible consequences should people choose to ignore them.

“Almost a third of the people have removed their boats at this point, but we’re still asking for the rest of the boat owners to move their vessels so that we don’t have to resort to storing themselves ourselves,” Hoffmann said.
