Boca Dam road re-opens

Sierra Sun staff reports

The Bureau of Reclamation has re-opened the road across the Boca Reservoir dam east of Truckee.

Remote-operated, solar-powered barricades were installed on the road over the dam in March 2006 because of security concerns. The road will remain open until security conditions warrant another closure, bureau officials said.

Bureau spokesman Jefferey McCracken said in an earlier interview with the Sierra Sun that every dam is different and that Boca was singled out for closure because of its unique features, which includes the public road that runs directly on top of the dam.

Boca Reservoir is fed by the Little Truckee River. It has a surface area of 980 acres when full. Boca, along with Prosser and Stampede reservoirs, is operated by the Bureau of Reclamation for water storage, recreation and flood protection purposes.

To obtain information about the status of road access, call Reclamation’s recording at (800) 742-9474. When prompted on the recording, press 2, and then press 4 for Boca Dam road closure information.
