Body found at Stampede Reservoir that of missing Reno man
Coburn was first reported missing by his wife on January 18 of this year and the Reno Police Department opened a missing person investigation. Coburn’s wife was supposed to meet him for dinner with a friend on the evening of Jan. 18 but Coburn never arrived. He didn’t tell anyone of his plans on the day he disappeared. Coburn often went four-wheel driving in the area and his vehicle was discovered near Stampede on February 1, two weeks after he was first reported missing.
The Sierra County Sheriff’s Department conducted a thorough search of the area from the ground and the air in conjunction with the Reno Police Department and the United States Forest Service. The search was suspended the following morning.
An angler found the body on the northeast bank of the Sierra County reservoir on Tuesday. It was discovered less than a mile from where the vehicle was discovered and did not appear to have been disturbed. An autopsy was performed yesterday by the Washoe County Coroner, and a positive identity was made from a combination of dental records, and a tattoo on Coburn’s arm. Coburn’s driver’s license was also found with the body.
The official cause of death is still unknown according to Sierra County Under Sheriff David Marshall.
“There was no obvious sign of foul play,” said Marshall, adding that finding a definitive cause of death is more difficult due to the body’s two-month exposure to weather. Additional tests will be performed on the body to determine the cause of death, but those tests could take several weeks.
