Brockway Summit crash kills two

A two-car head-on collision near Brockway Summit killed a Grass Valley man and a Modesto man in one car and injured the driver of another vehicle late Saturday.

Mark James Strelow, 42 of Grass Valley, was driving with passenger Barry Wayne Zimmerman, 43 of Modesto, northbound on state Route 267 in a 1997 Subaru at an unknown speed, according to California Highway Patrol reports.

Reno-resident Barney Drake, 44, was driving his pick-up truck southbound in the right lane, north of the summit, when the oncoming Subaru drifted onto the right shoulder. Strelow overcorrected to the left, lost control of his vehicle, crossed the southbound lane, and collided head-on with Drake’s 2001 Toyota Tundra.

Strelow and Zimmerman were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Placer County Coroner’s Office. Drake was treated and released at Tahoe Forest Hospital with minor injuries, said hospital spokeswoman Teri Smith.

CHP Officer Kirk Bromell said the investigation of the crash is ongoing and it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
