As an increasing number of riders hop aboard the buses, shuttles and trolleys around the North Shore and Truckee, even more transit opportunities will be made available.

Summer ridership was significantly up from last year, said Jan Colyer, the executive director of Truckee North Tahoe Transportation Management Association, and Tahoe Area Regional Transit is looking to ramp up again for winter. Colyer said the system will expand service hours as well as provide extra buses in the mornings and evenings for locals trying to get to and from work.

The biggest demand is for frequency and nighttime options, she said.



“The goal at some point is to have a seamless system that runs every 30 minutes,” said Ron Treabess, director of community planning with the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association.

The free summer nighttime shuttle was deemed a success by riders, the resort association and the transportation management association. Because of its popularity, the resort association is working to continue the 6 p.m. to midnight shuttle for the winter running from Squaw Valley to Incline Village.



“We’re working on trying to make this happen in Truckee as well,” Colyer said.

TART has not previously had the manpower to run late night shuttles, as drivers can be hard to come by, said Treabess. Currently, the associations are working to contract with a Reno-based company to run the night shuttle. TART is a strong supporter of these additional contracted services, said Treabess.

“The later [TART] runs, the better for me,” said Patrick Sayre, a Tahoe City resident. “Sometimes we don’t get off work until late.”

Sayre said he uses TART as his main means of transportation and travels at various hours for his construction job between the West Shore, Truckee, Kings Beach and Tahoe City.

This winter TART will continue with the hourly service on Highway 89 south, but will be supplemented with extra “chaser” buses early in the morning and late in the evening because the first buses were typically full last year, said Treabess.

Two skier shuttles also serve Truckee via Highway 267 and to and from Sugar Bowl.

It’s particularly important to increase transit accessibility beginning Nov. 15 because of the new Reno-Tahoe Airport shuttle, said Treabess and Colyer, adding that the aim is to enable people who visit the region without a vehicle to still get around.

“If [we] encourage people to come up without their cars, we need to provide seamless service to continue around the area without a car. And provide smooth service into the night time,” said Treabess.

“We’d like to get people out of their cars,” said Colyer, in an effort to improve air quality, traffic congestion and winter road safety.
