Incline-Truckee home care business celebrates 10 years of service
In 10 years, A Step Above’s Gary Grosjean has seen it all.
From the market crash and recession that followed, through the great snow years and the current extreme drought, the founder of the region’s premiere home care and maintenance provider was able to establish and quickly grow a successful business by staying focused on core principles relating to always exceeding client expectations.
Grosjean was well aware of the challenges he faced when starting the firm 10 years ago, and the “95/5” rule for new companies — the one that states 95 percent of start-ups fail in the first five years.
But the veteran music industry tour, stage, and production manager for acts such as The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Chicago, Whitesnake, Alice Cooper, Duran Duran and others has built the firm’s decade-long success on using the exact same set of skills and talents that made him successful in the music industry — listening carefully to his client’s exacting needs, demonstrating an overwhelming attention to detail, and always going that extra “step above” and beyond what’s expected.
“It’s really the same job I’ve always done,” says Grosjean. “I’ve gone from caring for the needs of high-end musicians to caring for the needs of high-end homeowners. Both demand ultimate trust in your abilities — as the demands on their time can be overwhelming.”
And it is the level of trust Grosjean earns with his clients that sets A Step Above apart from other home care service providers.
The Truckee resident and single dad of three saw the potential and the need for a well-run home care business while working as a project manager for John Brink Construction, a respected high end builder in the area.
During the process of providing the highest level of customer service to families while building their dream homes in Tahoe, he recognized the need for the same level of service and attention to continue after the home was completed.
“It made a lot of sense — and it really is based on the simple idea of earning trust,” Grosjean said. “The property owners we provide our services for truly love being here, but because of their busy schedules, can’t visit as often as they’d wish. A Step Above was founded with the understanding that their home means a great deal to them, and they need to feel that they completely trust those who take care of it for them when they’re not able to be here.
“Each and every day, we constantly focus on striving to earn and maintain that level of trust.”
To further grow an all-encompassing relationship with a homeowner, Grosjean realized the firm had to provide virtually every service a homeowner would need, so that a client would never need to turn to other providers.
Anticipating those needs can be daunting, but A Step Above can provide services from a diverse list that includes everything from general house and professional post construction cleaning, home maintenance and repairs, deck restorations and house staining, interior design, concierge services and grocery shopping, home arrival preparation and home closings, wood splitting and stacking, and snow removal.
During the current drought, Grosjean has also re-focused the firm’s efforts to help with providing defensible space clearing for his clientele – offering the complete pine needle and vegetation clearing services necessary to help protect homes during the highest-risk fire season the region has seen in years.
Of making it through the first ten years, Grosjean said, “It’s been a great ride. We started with core principles that we still cling to — what our focus was then is still our focus now. It’s good to know that what we truly knew would work 10 years ago still works as well as it always has today.”
With offices in Truckee and Incline Village, A Step Above offers a complete range of home care services, serving part and full-time residences in Incline Village, North and West Shore of Lake Tahoe, Northstar, Martis Valley, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Truckee, and Donner Lake.
