Meet Your Tahoe Merchant: New eatery looks to find niche in Incline

An unlikely trio has teamed up in Incline to open 941 Eatery and Bar — a new restaurant located at a familiar location in Incline Village.

The location that once housed Stanley’s Restaurant had been entrenched in litigation due to contamination from once-nearby gas pumps for seven years.

Attorney and investor Jim Puzey eventually called on Adam Bishop and Paul Bonaldi to help him open a new restaurant in the location that Puzey said had been “an eyesore” for so many years.

The men put their heads together to create a new eatery that they hope will please both tourists and locals.

Puzey said he was excited to open the new business with passionate people.

“These people are doing it for the love of doing it,” Jim said.

Head chef Paul Bonaldi’s experience comes from banquet dining as well as previously owning restaurants in Carson City.

“Jim sought me out,” Bonaldi said. “He offered me free reign in the kitchen.”

Bonaldi said he’s looking forward to helping 941 find its niche in the community and is glad to not have to run the whole show, and be able to focus on the kitchen.

“We’re trying to put menu items on there to intrigue people to come back, but also put new things on the menu,” Bonaldi said.

His experience and preferred cuisine is Mediterranean with French classical. The 941 menu has an array of choices for lunch and dinner, such as sliders, shrimp salads, creamy polenta, pot stickers, ribeye and Bonaldi’s decadent house made desserts.

Like any chef, Bonaldi has been putting in long hours to get 941 ready, working as many as 90 hours in a week to perfect the menu and train his cooks.

“It’s about quality, freshness and consistency,” said Bonaldi, adding that he tries to use local produce whenever possible.

General Manager Adam Bishop left a secure job in Reno at Puzey’s enticing with the idea of opening 941 last October.

The young man believes in taking risks.

“You don’t get anywhere playing the safe route,” he said. “Things work out well if you take risks.”

Bishop said he is prepared for the challenges of opening a new restaurant, especially in such a seasonal town.

His background as a UNR football player has taught him skills like hard work, attention to detail and discipline.

Bishop said he approaches the new business the same way.

“As long as you don’t stop improving and trying new things and watching numbers,” he said. “It’s about diligence and tirelessness and being smart and paying attention to little things.”

Kyla Davidson is a bartender at 941 and a new face to the area, having recently moved from Idaho.

Among the Loyalty Club, the good menu and the dedication of her employers, Davidson said the eatery is headed in a good direction.

“I really like everyone I work for,” she said. “You can tell they’re in it for the long haul; they make sure everyone is up to speed.”

The eatery has big plans for the summer, including an open patio, beer garden, and live music.

Puzey said they hope to make 941 a “fun stop” for day trippers and a go-to for locals. He hopes 941 can be a place for both locals and tourists, “adding to the community” and “expanding the pie.”
