Raley’s grocery store approved for Truckee
January 30, 2018
A proposed Raley's grocery store moved one step closer to ramping up the competition for consumer dollars in Truckee.
The 35,704-square-foot store was officially approved at the Tuesday, Jan. 23, meeting of the town's planning commission meeting.
The grocery store will sit on a 16-acre parcel, with a 12,000-sqaure-foot co-anchor tenant, amid a mixed-use commercial center that will be developed in multiple phases. The development will be named Soaring Ranch. The property is located at the intersection of Highway 267 and Soaring Way, which is adjacent to Truckee Tahoe Airport.
Commissioner David Polivy represented a minority of the community who were concerned about workforce housing.
"Have we ever actually built any housing in the last five years, instead of paying the in-lieu fee?" asked Polivy.
Art Chapman, who represented the grocery store applicant at the meeting, originally brought up the idea of adding housing to the site. After deliberation with the town staff, it was made clear that adding housing to the development would prolong the Raley's project because of complexities, such as zoning requirements, noise, and airport impacts.

The Raley's grocery store and additional commercial development was described by planning manager Jenna Gatto as "lodge-itechture," or made to look like a ski lodge more than a grocery store. It is a utilitarian design mixing symmetry and asymmetry, and made with wood and steel materials. The center will also have three large, real gas fire pits. The Raley's store will feature a wine and beer bar, and an in-store nutritionist.
"We are excited to receive planning commission approval for the new Raley's in Truckee. More importantly, we were appreciative with the amount of support from residents and homeowners," said Raley's Public Relations and Affairs Director Chelsea Minor. "Raley's mission to offer high-quality, healthier products at a value aligns with the town of Truckee. We are looking forward to serving the Truckee community with an exceptional shopping experience, all four seasons of the year."
At the end of the three and a half hour meeting, the project was approved in 5-0 vote.
