Shop Local contest registration deadline is Nov. 16

Staff report

TAHOE-TRUCKEE, Calif. — The annual Shop Local-North Tahoe & Truckee contest begins Nov. 27 and runs through Dec. 24.

Businesses across the greater Truckee-North Shore region are encouraged to register for the 2015 holiday contest online through shopnorthtahoetruckee.com; the deadline is Monday, Nov. 16.

“The Shop Local program was designed to support local businesses, reduce the carbon footprint of locals traveling outside of their community to shop, and protect the region’s local character,” according to the contest. “Money spent at local businesses recirculates through wages and taxes, benefitting the economic health of the entire community and supporting unique local businesses.”

“The purpose of this ‘Shop Local’ event is to encourage residents to shop local this holiday season‚ using rack cards for chances to win prizes such as cash, ski tickets or a 7-night tropical vacation,” said Stacie Lyans, executive director of the Tahoe City Downtown Association.

After businesses register, cards will be delivered on Nov. 20.

Eligible businesses include retail and service stores, and they must member of a Shop Local partner business association.

According to the contest, restaurants can participate by selling gift merchandise (t-shirts, hats, etc) or gift certificates.
