Sun Staff Report

Sales tax is increasing in California by 1 percent today.

The temporary tax hike adding one cent per dollar will be in effect until either July 1, 2011, or July 1, 2012, depending on the outcome of voting May 19 on Proposition 1A, the Budget Stabilization Act.

The increase is expected to bring nearly $6 billion during the next 15 months, and is the first major tax increase since 1991, according to the Associated Press.

This brings the Truckee sales tax total to 8.875 percent ” including the new 8.25 percent state sales tax, .125 percent Nevada County Public Tax, and the .5 percent Truckee Road Maintenance tax.

Elsewhere in the region, unincorporated Nevada County will be 8.375 percent, Placer County 8.25 percent, El Dorado County 8.25 percent, and the City of South Lake Tahoe at 8.75 percent.
