Caltrans completes Highway 89 repavement project near Tahoe

TRUCKEE – Caltrans announced last week the completion of the shoulder-to-shoulder repavement project on Highway 89 between Squaw Valley Road to West River Street.According to Caltrans, the $7.2 million project between Truckee and Olympic Valley improves the surface for bikes and motor vehicles, and includes water quality protection from stormwater drainage while extending the pavement life an additional 10 years.”This project is an important investment in our infrastructure,” said Caltrans District 3 Director, Jody Jones, in a statement. “In recent years, our crews have increasingly had to repair major stretches of the travel lanes and shoulders to prevent further erosion, correct water drainage problems, and improve safety. The shoulder-to-shoulder repavement immediately reduces maintenance costs and improves motorist and cyclist safety.”Stretches of Highway 89 have had extensive pavement failure, including cracking, rutting and insufficient water drainage that threatened the roadbed, according to a Caltrans press release. The last shoulder-to-shoulder repave was nearly 20 years ago. The travel lanes received additional resurfacing in various projects from 2003-06, according to the department, but excluded bike lanes/shoulders, presenting particular challenges for cyclists.”We brought our concerns to Caltrans and they were extremely responsive,” said Paco Lindsay, owner of Paco’s Bike & Ski, in a statement. “We are thrilled the project is done and that the cycling community’s safety was taken into account.”The prime contractor for the project was Sierra Nevada Construction of Sparks.
