Caltrans: Donner Summit rest stop reopening delayed until next Tuesday

TRUCKEE, Calif. andamp;#8212; Caltrans is celebrating the grand reopening of the westbound side of the Donner Summit rest stop located on Interstate 80, near Donner Pass in Nevada County.Caltrans is hosting a Driver Appreciation Day, on Tuesday, Nov. 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring a ribbon cutting and speakers who were involved in various aspects of the remodel. The first 500 cars to come through will receive a gift bag.The rest stop was originally scheduled to reopen Tuesday, Nov. 15; however, weather conditions led to the delay, a Caltrans spokeswoman said Wednesday. The eastbound side of the rest sop will reopen on Dec. 6.The rest stop, which has been closed since spring 2009, underwent an extensive remodel to accommodate the more than three million visitors that use its facilities annually.According to the project, remodel upgrades include:andamp;#8226; Compliance with current Americans with Disabilities Act standards,andamp;#8226; More bathroom stalls,andamp;#8226; Heated walkways from the handicap parking to the buildings keep snow from building up and melts icy surfaces to help prevent falls; and andamp;#8226; Backup generators, well systems, and improved parking facilities with enhanced safety lighting.According to Caltrans, these new features will help improve the accessibility for individuals with disabilities, prevent closures during the stormy season and create a safer environment for night time travelers.For information regarding Caltrans and the GetAcross80 construction project in the Sierra region, along the I-80 corridor, visit GetAcross80.com.
