Caltrans employee struck and killed while filling pothole

SACRAMENTO (AP) ” A pickup truck struck and killed a state Department of Transportation worker while he was filling potholes on Interstate 5.

The driver of a Ford F-150 pickup hit Caltrans employee Matthew White, 35, Friday near Elk Grove, California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Bradley said.

Caltrans Director Will Kempton ordered a statewide safety stand-down, during which all agency maintenance employees halted work and returned to their maintenance yards to review safety procedures.

Bradley said the driver of the pickup, a 25-year-old Elk Grove man, may not have seen White because of traffic. Police have not decided on charges.

White, of Sacramento, was the third Caltrans employee killed on the job this year.
