Car mows down telephone poll, dips into Lake Tahoe; driver OK

TAHOMA, Calif. and#8212; An elderly male is recovering from minor injuries after the vehicle he was driving struck a utility pole and plunged into Lake Tahoe early Tuesday morning, according to law enforcement officials.

The man was traveling southbound on Highway 89 in Tahoma near the intersection of Meadow Lane when the vehicle drifted right of the road and struck a wooden telephone pole, said California Highway Patrol Trooper Gavin Graham.

The vehicle completely dislocated the pole, proceeded back across Highway 89 before falling about 5 feet into Lake Tahoe, Graham said. The vehicle came to rest in the water, about 15 feet from the shoreline, although at no point was it submerged.

and#8220;When we tried to start the car, it fired right up, so it was never completely underwater,and#8221; Graham said. and#8220;The water came up to the bottom of the car.and#8221;

Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be contributing factors to the accident, Graham said.

and#8220;The driver told me the sun impaired his vision,and#8221; Graham said.

The driver was taken to Tahoe Forest Hospital via ambulance and treated for minor injuries and later released, Graham said.

No oil or gasoline leaked into the lake, Graham said.
