A 29-year-old woman is being held on attempted murder charges after she allegedly stole her father’s car at gunpoint in El Dorado County and crashed it on Donner Summit Sunday afternoon. The carjacking occurred late Saturday night northwest of Placerville, according to law enforcement officials. Jessica Smith, who was getting a ride to a rehab house from her father, Stephen Brigham, allegedly pulled out a pistol and ordered Brigham from the Honda Accord. Brigham, who had a restraining order on Smith because of prior incidents, reported to police that he heard her fire the gun as he exited the vehicle.Smith appeared to be under the influence of drugs, Brigham told officers. He fled the scene and escaped uninjured, except for minor cuts and scratches from diving from the car. When police responded to the scene they found that Smith had driven off in Brigham’s car.Responding to reports of a car crash near the Donner Lake interchange and Interstate 80 at about 1 p.m. Sunday, CHP officers found the stolen car rolled over and blocking both eastbound lanes of the interstate. The speeding vehicle had struck the guardrail and crashed, the CHP reported. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Smith, who had no serious injuries, was arrested and charged with vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, driving under the influence of drugs and attempted murder, according to the CHP. She was transported to Wayne Brown Correctional Facility in Nevada City.
