TRUCKEE, Calif. — Last week, Tahoe Forest Hospital announced that the first baby of the New Year was born Thursday, Jan. 1, at 6:15 p.m.

Baby boy Tristan Luka weighed 7 pounds, 11 and a half ounces at birth and measured 20 and a half inches.

Mom Christine Monroe lives in Carnelian Bay. Baby Tristan also has a big brother, 7-year-old Kasey.

Having the first baby of the New Year came as a complete surprise to Christine, who, the day before, had done a crossfit session, taken a hike, and gone out for New Year’s Eve with her dad.

The baby arrived a little sooner than she expected. On New Year’s Day she labored at home for a while, but her labor progressed unexpectedly rapidly.

Her mom had to rush her to the hospital, arriving at the Tahoe Forest Emergency Room entrance at 6:10 p.m., where a transporter hurried by her wheelchair to the Women and Family Center.

The Tahoe Forest Hospital Women and Family Center presented the family with a gift basket of items generously donated by several Tahoe-Truckee community members and local merchants to honor the 2015 New Year’s baby.

“It’s awesome how this small town comes together to provide this great gift basket, “ said Christine. “What a great gift for the New Year. I couldn’t ask for anything else.”

The Hinkle Family marked the second baby of the New Year, as Jamey and Kathryn Hinkle welcomed newborn Mayzie, also born on New Year’s Day.
