COVID cases rise, slower than last week
As of Thursday morning, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nevada County was 2,149. There are 254 new cases since Thursday, Dec. 10, indicating a 13% increase. Cases continue to rise, though not as rapidly as the first week in December.
Of the 2,149 total cases, 1,581 have been released from isolation and 534 are presently active, 21 more than last week. There have been 34 deaths by COVID-19 in Nevada County, 15 in the last week. According to the California Department of Public Health, 15 of Nevada County’s deaths took place in the Golden Empire Nursing Home.
Nevada and Placer counties enter the second week of a three-week shelter-in-place order today. Government officials maintain that the order will alleviate pressure in ICUs with limited capacity. Restaurants are only able to offer takeout. Gyms and yoga studios are closed entirely.
As of Thursday morning, Placer County reported 9,972 COVID-19 cases. The 1,428 additional cases recorded reflect a 17% increase in cases since last week — less than last week’s 28% increase. The county death toll is 97 — 12 of which took place in the last week.
Issues with Placer County data have led to discrepancies in its numbers.
The state prohibited all hotel and short-term rental lodging owners from honoring reservations for people coming from out of state unless they quarantine for two weeks or are coming under special circumstances. Testing centers’ availability is limited and changes by the day. The government has strongly advised community members to wear masks and socially distance to mitigate the rising cases of COVID-19.
