Chamber still accepting July Fourth parade entries

ABHUTCHISON, Sierra Sun

Entries for this year’s Truckee Fourth of July Parade, the last before the new millennium, are still being accepted.

Parade organizers, Pattie and Hartley Lesser, are also looking for volunteers to help the day of the event in areas such as stage set-up, helping cops with traffic and helping judges at the end of the parade. Volunteers will get a T-shirt.

There are six categories for which trophies are awarded, and a grand prize trophy for Best of Show.

Applications for parade entries can be picked up at the Truckee-Donner Chamber of Commerce. There is a $20 fee for each entry.

This year, skydiver Charles Bryan will take a plunge from the sky to kick off this year’s parade.

Bryan, who is president of Skydive Lake Tahoe, has had more than 4,000 jumps and has broken the record for the world’s fastest freefall speed of 321 mph. His parade jump is being sponsored by Truckee attorney Bob Cohune.

Other Fourth of July Parade highlights include appearances by Chief Truckee, Northern California Alaskan Malamute Association, Sierra West Bernese Mountain Dog Club, a time capsule by the Truckee Family Connection, Donner Jeep Tours, miniature horses, Smokey the Bear and fire engines.

The parade will start at Sierra Mountain Middle School at 10 a.m.
