Chief’s Corner: Dry conditions call for extra precautions

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Chief’s Corner” is a regular feature in the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza from North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District Chief Mike Brown, offering information, tips and education material on fire safety, emergency preparedness and other pertinent topics.
With precipitation for the northern Nevada area well below average and no significant precipitation systems on the horizon, we encourage citizens to exercise extra safety precautions both indoors and outdoors. The potential risk for wildfires due to lack of moisture is a concern.
Please use extra caution with any ignition source. When using your fireplace please make sure you know how to operate your flue properly and that your chimney is free of creosote buildup, which can lead to unnecessary chimney fires. Always use a proper metal ash can to dispose of fireplace ashes.
Above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation mean utilizing extra caution when outdoors as well. Always use proper receptacles for cigarettes and ensure that materials are completely extinguished before discarding.
