Clear weather until cold front moves into the area on Friday

Jim Grant/Sun News ServiceSunny weather and light winds are in the forecast for the next of couple days.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ” High pressure over the Western United States will continue to keep days mild and sunny and nights clear and crisp into Thursday. Low temperatures are expected to dip into the mid and upper 20s around the Lake Tahoe Basin this morning and in the upper 20s to lower 30s Thursday morning.

High temperatures will continue to rise into the upper 60s to lower 70s both today and Thursday. These daytime highs are around five degrees above the seasonal norm of 66 for this date, while lows are forecast to be 5 degrees cooler than the seasonal norm of 34.

An approaching low-pressure system and associated cold front will bring increasing high clouds and some afternoon southwest winds around 10 to 20 mph on Thursday. Look for windy conditions on Friday as the front moves into Northern California and across the northern Sierra Friday afternoon.

Only light amounts of precipitation are expected with this fast-moving system, mainly from Lake Tahoe northward. Temperatures drop down 10 to 15 degrees Friday and Saturday, with highs mostly in the 50s. Sunday should be a fairly nice day with temperatures rising back into the 60s, but increasing southwest winds are expected by Sunday afternoon ahead of the next frontal system heading our way on Monday.

There may be a better chance of precipitation with Monday’s system; however, it’s still too early to project amounts or snow levels. It’s a good time to winterize the house and autos, as an early winter may be possible in this La Nina pattern.
