Commercial Row burglary suspect on the loose

A downtown Truckee art store was broken into Sunday night and a witness reportedly saw a suspect placing the store’s safe in nearby bushes.

After being alerted of an alarm, Truckee police officers arrived at La Galleria, located at 10112 on Donner Pass Road, at about 11:35 p.m. to find several of the doors had been forcibly opened and it appeared the suspect entered through the back door and pried open the interior door, according to police reports.

A store safe, containing money and some jewelry, was reported stolen when La Galleria’s store manager arrived at the scene, and was later recovered in the bushes across the street. All of the valuables were still inside, and it is unknown what the safe’s contents were worth, said Truckee police Chief Scott Berry.

A witness who lives in an apartment next to the place where the safe was dumped described the suspect as a white male in his late teens to early 20s. The witness said the suspect was wearing a white knit cap, a dark long-sleeved shirt with white sleeves and front pockets, and sweat pants.

The witness saw the suspect traveling east on Jibboom Street, according to police reports.

Berry said police are working on the investigation and no one has been arrested yet.

Hours after the reported break-in, witnesses said they saw a man dressed in dark clothes looking through the bushes where the safe was discovered just after 2 a.m. Monday, according to police reports.

A police officer was at La Galleria but was unable to locate the suspect.
