Committee considers personal watercraft issue

Staff Reports

A special committee of the Truckee Town Council will consider the issue of personal watercraft on Donner Lake Tuesday, May 18.

The committee, headed by councilmembers Bob Drake and Don McCormack, will hear concerns and proposed solutions to the expected increased use of personal watercraft on Donner Lake.

“We’re going to listen to citizens’ concerns, lay out issues and problems, and see if there is any consensus or suggestion on solutions,” Drake said.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency implemented a ban on most two-stroke engines on Lake Tahoe, which takes effect this June.

Since many personal watercraft now used on Lake Tahoe are powered by two-stroke engines, some residents fear Donner Lake may be crowded this summer with Tahoe’s outcasts.

Residents spoke up at a recent town council meeting, citing environmental concerns, including the MTBE pollution generated by two-stroke personal watercraft, the noise pollution caused by all personal watercraft, and the excessive percentage of personal watercraft involved in accidents.

Although only 16 percent of recreational boats in California are personal watercraft, they were involved in 55 percent of all boating injury accidents in 1997, according to figures released by California Department of Boating and Waterways.

Meeting time

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, in council chambers on Donner Pass Road.
