Standing before Truckee Town Council Thursday night, Truckee Fire Chief Bryce Keller praised the cooperation and swift response that led to quick control of the recent 80-acre Interchange Fire ” and soberly reminded those watching that this time, Truckee was lucky.
Keller said because of standing cooperative agreements between local fire fighting agencies, the response to the fire was instantaneous.
Calfire’s Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit Chief Brad Harris agreed.
“We didn’t care about jurisdictions with the agreements we had in place,” Harris said. “This was a great success story.”
But Keller also pointed out that the conditions could have been much worse.
“We were lucky this fire happened under a fuels treatment area,” Keller said. “The weather conditions were relatively mild ” it wasn’t a critical fire day.”
He also stressed that the fire season is not over, and that some of the worst fires traditionally happen in the fall.
“The story may have been much different,” Keller said. “We will have more wildfires and yes, some will get large, and yes, we will lose homes. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.”
