Copper theft suspect ID’d
A Nevada County judge has issued an arrest warrant for a man identified as the suspect in recent copper thefts near the town of Truckee.
A $100,000 warrant for the arrest of John Douglas Murdock was signed on July 16.
According to Truckee Police Detective Bill Mardison, Murdock was identified as the suspect in two copper wire thefts off Interstate 80 this month, and perhaps several more in the Washoe County area.
The first theft occurred on July 5 in the early morning. More then 4,800 feet of copper wiring was stolen from a Caltrans utility box at the inspection station on I-80.
On July 10, Sgt. Dan Johnston of the Truckee Police Department caught Murdock in the act of allegedly stealing wiring from a utility box located near the offramp to Highway 267.
Evidence found at the scene led police to suspect Murdock, a transient from the Reno area with no specific residence.
Washoe County detectives said Murdock was a person of interest for similar copper thefts in their area.
The suspect has yet to be apprehended as the investigation continues.
Anyone with information about this case, particularly sightings of Murdock, are asked to call Detective Mardison at 550-2336.
