A large Truckee storage building caught on fire Wednesday night and burned through 10 storage units before being extinguished by local firefighters.

The West River Street blaze at EXTRA Mini Storage was reported by a passing Union Pacific train at 10:30 p.m. Firefighters fought the fire for an hour and a half before containing the fire.

The damage to 4,800-square-foot building was estimated at $500,000 and the damage to the contents of the storage facility was estimated at $1 million.

Eight fire engines from Truckee and surrounding fire districts responded to the scene.

Firefighters stayed at the scene until morning, pulling the contents out of the storage units to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished. Adjacent units had to be opened up and some contents removed to make sure that the fire had not extended into them.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and is currently under investigation.
